Biography

Born into a farmers’ family in Nahri village, Haryana, Amit was introduced to wrestling when he was only seven years old.

He came to prominence when he became the youngest wrestler ever to represent India at Olympic Games. He was also the youngest athlete of the 2012 Indian Olympic delegation.

After he won the silver award there, Sushil Kumar, the two-time Olympic medallist, called him the “next star of Indian wrestling”.

Career

2012 Asian Wrestling Championships: won Bronze

2013 World Wrestling Championships (Budapest): won Silver in the 55-kilogram category

2013 Asian Wrestling Championships: won Gold by defeating Kyong-Il Yang of South Korea 3:1 in the Gold medal bout.

2014 Commonwealth Games: won Gold in men’s freestyle 57-kilogram category by defeating Ebikweminomo Welson of Nigeria.
